Vince Gilligan Reveals He Knows How The Apple TV+ Show Might Finish... For Now.
The creative mastermind did not foresee that the Apple TV+ show would become a massive hit. “The viewers have been incredible,” Gilligan says. “It was unexpected the show being as talked about as it is, and it makes me deliriously happy.”
Now that Season 1 of the hit program wrapping up—and a second season already in development—the creative team recently discussed the viewer reception and whether it will shape the narrative path of Pluribus.
On the Tremendous Audience Reaction
It would be easy to get sidetracked by the rampant praise and audience predictions about Pluribus. Gilligan, however, is striving to ignore the noise.
“It feels like constantly eating something incredibly sweet and being laughing uncontrollably,” he describes. “It's wonderful, but I get wind of it anecdotally, and that's on purpose. I have never looked myself up on the internet, nor do I ever want to. It's quite the opposite. It's a rabbit hole I know I would get lost in and then I'd be pooping in a five gallon bucket from Home Depot and I'd never leave my living room.”
Regardless of Gilligan’s best intentions, there’s no escaping the extremely enthusiastic response to the series. The only approach for the writers is to accept it graciously and try not to let it dictate the story of the show.
“We make no attempt to adjust our writing,” says Alison Tatlock. “The plot we develop is not changed by what people are saying.”
“It's wiser to keep our heads down and working,” he chimes in.
A Pressing Query: Does the showrunner See the Ending of Pluribus?
Considering the writers are not listening by audience theories, can we assume they have mapped out how Pluribus will ultimately end? In short yes… in a way.
“We've developed some interesting ideas about the ultimate destination,” Gilligan reveals. “however, we remain prepared to discard a decent plan for a more brilliant plan. This approach has served us in well on Better Call Saul and on Breaking Bad even before that. We throw stuff out when we find a more perfect path and I expect we'll continue doing that.”
On the other hand, if all else fails, executive producer Gordon Smith has a rather amusing idea to use as a backup.
“I constantly suggest that the entire story is inside a snow globe, and that we'll pull back at the end and that's where they've been all along,” Smith quips, “but nobody's taking me up on that.”
Then again, one could always use the iconic TV endings?
“My dream is Carol to open her eyes beside Bob Newhart,” he jokes.
Pluribus is currently available on the streaming service.
