The Reasons the Duke of York Has Surrendered His Official Titles – and What It Means for the Monarchy
In a statement issued by the royal household, the king's brother has confirmed that he will be relinquishing his royal titles, such as his dukedom. Here is an overview of what has been revealed – and what remains unchanged.
What Did the Prince Announced?
After previously withdrawn as a working royal in 2019, Andrew has currently chosen to “go a step further” and agree to refrain from using the “honor or the awards which have been conferred upon” him.
However, he employed the announcement to emphatically rejecting – as he has always done – the allegations of misconduct leveled at him; even though having paid out a substantial sum to settle the legal claim filed by Virginia Giuffre – an agreement in which he accepted no fault and strongly rejected all allegations of wrongdoing.

To revoke a dukedom would take legislative action, and would represent such a historic move publicly before the nation – it has not happened to a senior royal in over a century – that it would likely cause more harm to the image for the royals.
The prince remains still a prince. At his birth in 1960, he was automatically as the child of the sovereign. This would only be altered if a letters patent was issued by the king.

Furthermore, the sovereign is scheduled to undertake a significant trip to see the pontiff next week, during which he will be the first English monarch after Henry the Eighth broke from the Catholic Church in 1534 to worship openly with the Holy Father and head of the Catholic church. He will not have wanted that visit to be overshadowed by more negative headlines about Andrew.
What Was the Reaction?
While he said his sister had been “justified” by the decision, her sibling Sky Roberts has told the Times that the prince's style should be revoked for “true justice” to be done.
The anti-monarchist campaign group Republic has also said the action is “too little, too late”, adding: “The prince continues to be accused of sexual misconduct and misuse of position. He ought to be stripped of every honor and his navy rank and should face a criminal investigation. Refraining from using archaic honors is not a penalty that fits the offences.”
