The Former French President to Pen Jail Diary Chronicling Two Dozen Days In Custody

Nicolas Sarkozy is preparing a personal account next month called A Prisoner’s Diary, which recounts his time spent in jail.

The announcement emerged shortly following the former president gained freedom as he contests the court ruling for criminal conspiracy regarding a scheme to obtain election campaign funds provided by the regime of former Libyan leader.

Prison Experience: Inner Thoughts

“Behind bars one sees little, with little to occupy time,” he writes in a preview, indicating the book will focus on his reflections during isolation instead of extensive analysis regarding the strained and crisis-hit correctional facilities in the country.

“I forget silence, which doesn’t exist in La Santé, where noise is endless commotion,” he states. “The racket is alas constant. Yet, similar to barren lands, personal reflection is fortified behind bars.”

Court Appearance: Recounting the Hardship

While appealing for release, Sarkozy had appeared via screen from inside the facility, describing his time inside as exhausting. He expressed in court: “I wish to commend those working in the jail, who are exceptionally humane, and who have made this ordeal tolerable – as it truly is one.”

“I never imagined that at 70 years of age, I’d find myself behind bars. It’s a hardship forced upon me. It’s challenging, I acknowledge, it’s very hard. It leaves a mark all who experience it because it’s gruelling.”

Unprecedented Situation

He, who led the nation between 2007 and 2012, was the first ex-leader from the EU and the first postwar leader of France to serve time in prison.

Prior to imprisonment he mentioned he planned to utilize the opportunity to write a book.

Books in Prison

It remains unclear whether he had time to go through the three books he brought with him: a biography of Jesus in two parts together with Dumas’s work the famous story, in which an innocent man is sentenced to jail then breaks out to take revenge.

Life in Confinement

The former leader remained in isolation to protect him in a space approximately nine square meters with his own shower and toilet in the Paris jail located in the capital. Guards stayed in the next cell.

Sources mentioned his diet consisted only yoghurts in prison due to concerns prison cuisine may have been contaminated. Although he had access to prepare his own meals but he turned this down, as per accounts. It is uncertain if the memoir includes meals during incarceration.

Legal Perspective

His attorney, Christophe Ingrain daily while he was in prison, told the release hearing he would be safer outside jail rather than in custody. “He received threats against his life, heard shouts during nighttime and the urgent intervention in a neighbouring cell as a detainee harmed themselves.”

Charges and Sentence

Sarkozy went to prison in late October after the judiciary sentenced him to five years in prison for illegal collaboration in connection with efforts to secure election financing during his election campaign.

He denies wrongdoing challenging the decision, and a fresh trial planned for early next year.
