Stupidity and Monarchical Hubris Sunk Andrew, and It Could Continue Yet
The saga started with a single photograph, perhaps the most significant ever taken of a individual from the royal household.
Present was the Earl of Inverness, with his arm around a teenage girl, while an associate beamed conspiratorially in the backdrop.
Absent that snapshot, taken at a social event in 2001, few would have credited the allegations of a adolescent who said she was transported across the sea and compelled to have brief sexual encounters with a individual of the royal bloodline?
An odd, telling action by someone who had publicly stated to have never heard of her, claimed he could no have had sex with her, and yet provided a substantial sum of family funds to settle a long-delayed legal case.
Over a Decade of Scandal
Considering this, conversations of the monarchy acting firmly to sever ties with Andrew are wide of the mark. This scandal has persisted for the largest portion of 15 years since that picture, and a further snapshot of Andrew strolling amiably with a notorious individual came to light.
- Self-importance: For what duration did his brothers and sisters, possibly even his mother and father, know that Andrew was so presumptuous?
- Dubious Friendships: They must have understood, if his aides and the authorities were performing their duties, that he had some extremely unsavory associates given he unabashedly invited them to estates.
- Financial Extravagance: If the family did not know about his intimate behaviors, they certainly knew about his wastefulness with public money.
Trips were printed in official documents: chopper travel from the estate to a sporting venue and back again in time for dining, exclusive air travel instead of regular transport, all for the benefit of "Airmiles Andy".
Existence of Entitlement
Furthermore the presumption which expected deference when he walked into a space or the extreme consciousness about his honorifics used on his letterheads in communication to his friends.
He managed to escape consequences while his parent, who unaccountably indulged him, was still alive. The monarch did at least strip him of official roles and military positions in the aftermath of his disastrous and, it is now clear, deceptive public statement six years ago.
Current Situation
Just in the last 14 days that events accelerated, following the release of books giving more troubling information of his actions and that of his associates.
Additional revelations have again revealed Andrew's thinking that he could escape deceiving about his contact with a convicted criminal.
People (and the press) were far ahead of the monarchy. There was no one of any importance to defend him, a result of all those years of presumption.
Institutional Fears
The more intelligent royals understood that. The one imperative is to pass on the institution, if not as previously at least complete and untarnished.
They have spent the last 190 years trying to undo the legacy of previous monarchs, showing they are valuable, accountable and responsive to their citizens.
His actions endangered all that in jeopardy in an time when respect and discretion is no longer sufficient.
The Fallout
Eventually, the famously uncertain monarch was prodded more. There was no other option. The palace had relinquished authority of the narrative.
Now it is the removal of honorifics and the ongoing and life-long social disgrace that will pain Andrew most deeply.
- Demotion: Demoted to just Mr Mountbatten-Windsor
- Prior Instance: The primary member to surrender his designations in contemporary era
- Military Service: Especially stinging given his role in the engagement
He remains a counsellor of state, in principle able to substitute for the king, and he is still in the succession to the throne, but neither of these will truly happen.
Coming Developments
Do individuals he comes across still show respect to him? Could they still make mistakes and call him Your Highness? Would they say Andrew,
Naturally, he is not withdrawing to an ordinary town, but to the monarchy's vast estate at a royal residence.
There, he will be supplied by the sovereign with one of the grace and favour houses and given some type of personal stipend.
This is not his prior accommodation, where he paid a token rent for more than 20 years, and the area is a bit distant, but even so it may not be sufficiently removed.
Outstanding Concerns
Matters remain unresolved. There are still documents in the possession of American legislators to be revealed.
- Political Pressure: Could legislators demand more
- Financial Investigation: Or investigate the misuse of public money
- Criminal Investigation: There may even be a law enforcement inquiry into his conduct
Perhaps for the time being the reputational impact to the monarchy is limited. The statement from the palace was plainly that the revocation of honorifics was what the monarch, and particularly other senior royals, wanted.
Altered Approach
An end to pretence that Andrew was doing it voluntarily. And, remarkably, the concise communication showed plainly that the monarchy were aligning with the victim's account of incidents.
Even more, for the first time they eventually showed concern for the victims: "These actions are considered essential, notwithstanding the reality that he continues to deny the accusations against him."
Finally it is arrogance, self-interest and inactivity that will destroy the monarchy. In his foolishness, personal excess and venality, Andrew appears never to have understood that lesson.
