Russian President Vladimir Putin Vows Uninterrupted Oil Deliveries to India in Snub of Washington Pressure

During a clear statement to the United States, President Vladimir Putin has told PM Narendra Modi that Russia stands ready to provide “uninterrupted” supplies of oil to India. These remarks came during a summit where both heads of state met in the Indian capital and affirmed their relationship were “immune to outside influence.”

A Signal For the Western Countries

This affirmation, made on Friday, appeared to be a direct challenge at the United States and its allies, who have tried to urge New Delhi into scaling back its longstanding links with Moscow. The context follows earlier American measures, notably the introduction of import duties targeting New Delhi over its purchase of Russian oil.

“Our nation is a trustworthy source of fuel and all required for the development of India’s economy,” Putin stated. “Moscow stands willing to persist in securing the uninterrupted flow of energy for the fast-expanding Indian economy.”

Modi, while not referencing crude explicitly, reinforced the theme by saying that “energy security has been a robust and vital cornerstone of the bilateral cooperation.”

Challenging Washington's Stance

Before the meeting, during a media interview, Putin had questioned US interference on India's energy purchases. He argued, “If the US is entitled to buy our nuclear fuel, how can you deny India have the equivalent access?”

Putin's arrival represented his first visit to India since the onset of the conflict in Ukraine, and both sides undertook a visible attempt to demonstrate that the personal rapport between the two leaders was undisturbed.

A Personal Reception

In a unusual gesture, Modi personally greeted Putin right off the plane. They shared a warm hug akin to longtime companions before having a closed-door supper on Thursday evening.

Modi in his statement called India's relationship with Russia as “a guiding star” and added it was “based on mutual respect and strong faith.”

Expanding Bilateral Ties

Friday's talks yielded several important deals regarding defence and trade relations. A cornerstone agreement was the finalization of an economic cooperation programme that runs to 2030, which targets to double commerce to a hundred billion USD each year by the end of the decade.

Additionally pledged to restructure their military partnership. Even as Russia remains India's biggest supplier of defence equipment, its share has declined over the past decade as India has sought broaden its procurement.

Their communique emphasized cooperation in the joint production of advanced military systems, even if specific mention of deals for the Sukhoi Su-57 were left out.

In conclusion, Russia and India reiterated that in the “current complex, tense, and volatile global landscape, Russian-Indian ties remain strong to external pressure.”
