Manchester United Poised to Secure German Striker Lea Schüller away from the Bavarian Giants
Manchester United are finalising completing the signing for prolific Germany striker Lea Schüller in a permanent move from the Frauen-Bundesliga champions.
A Marquee Acquisition for United
Schüller, who has half a year remaining on her contract, has been a consistent goalscorer for her club and the national team. She has netted over 100 goals for Bayern and scored 54 times in 82 appearances for her country. This signing will be seen as a major coup for the WSL side.
Her exit from Bayern has been anticipated since she was seen fighting back tears while thanking the club's supporters after a win over Bayer Leverkusen this month.
Reports in late December that the Frauen-Bundesliga was set to lose one of its leading strikers. According to reports, all the paperwork for the transfer have now been completed.
Reliable Goalscoring to Boost United's Attack
The 28-year-old’s signing should represent a significant boost to United’s forward line. Schüller has been highly reliable in front of goal in Germany’s top flight.
- Over seven consecutive seasons, including the most recent campaign, she achieved at least a double-figures tally of league goals.
- She won the Golden Boot in the 2021-22 season with 16 goals.
Building Steam at Old Trafford
Securing Schüller’s signature comes at a time when United appear to be building momentum.
Recent performances include qualifying for the Champions League knockout phase playoffs in a seeded position and a victory in the League Cup quarter-finals.
In the transfer market, the winter break has seen additional business:
- The acquisition of Swedish right-back Hanna Lundkvist on a multi-year deal.
- The contract extension for Japanese midfielder Hinata Miyazawa, who has become popular figure since joining in 2023.
Regarding Miyazawa’s extension, a senior figure commented: “Miyazawa is now a vital component to the way we play. Her understanding of the game and technical ability allows her and the team to dominate play from the middle of the park.”
The new defender, having joined from a club in the American league, said: “You can sense how much they [United] have grown in the last few years, playing in one of the strongest leagues in the world and now featuring in the Champions League.”
