Citizens have assembled around the country to commemorate the second anniversary since the Hamas-initiated assault on that fateful day in October 2023, as talks proceeded in Egypt over an end to the hostilities in Gaza.

The incident saw over 1,200 people dead and 251 others abducted back to Gaza as hostages. It was the single deadliest day for the Jewish community since the Second World War.

Israel reacted by initiating a armed campaign in Gaza which has claimed in excess of 67,000 people, as reported by the region's Hamas-run health ministry. Its statistics are considered trustworthy by the UN and other global organizations.

"The aggressive adversaries have struck forcefully, but they have not overcome us," the prime minister added on Tuesday.

He also promised to "achieve all the aims of the war: the homecoming of all the captured, the elimination of the Hamas administration and the guarantee that Gaza will not create a threat to Israel".

Memorial Ceremonies Across Israel

The national leadership delayed state commemorations until October 16th - after the conclusion of the festive season - but ceremonies still took place around the country on that day.

A commemorative event for the loved ones of people who died in the Hamas assault was held in the coastal city. Arranged by the families themselves, it was broadcast on Israeli TV networks.

Hours earlier, a minute's silence was held across the country.

Peace Talks in Egypt

Simultaneously, both sides' delegations gathered in the North African coastal city of the Egyptian city for a follow-up session of mediated discussions to review the conditions of the agreement.

A prominent representative knowledgeable about the talks indicated that an evening round of indirect talks commenced at 7 PM local time.

The source explained the morning session ended without tangible results, amid disagreements over the proposed Israeli retreat arrangements from Gaza and over assurances Hamas seeks to make certain Israel does not recommence hostilities after the initial stage of the deal.

He noted that the discussions are "tough and have not yet achieve any significant progress," but mentioned that intermediaries are working hard to reduce the disparities between the both parties.

Critical Matters in Discussions

  • A lasting ceasefire
  • The swap of the prisoners still held by Hamas for inmates from Gaza
  • The pullout of military personnel from Gaza
  • Arrangements for humanitarian aid deliveries
  • After-conflict management of the area

Civilian Sentiment

In Tel Aviv's public square previously, young Hagar - whose sibling lived through the assault on the Nova music festival, where many attendees were lost their lives and dozens more were abducted by Hamas militants - told: "Nowhere feels like home anymore and until every captive return not a single person will have peace of mind."

"Once we see everyone home returned, we can breathe again. Then we can commence recover," she added.

In front of the leader's official dwelling in Jerusalem, people gathered to show their solidarity for the families of the hostages. Israel says 48 stay in detention in Gaza, 20 of whom are believed to be alive.

Activist one woman remarked: "We must do every compromise necessary for the hostages to come back home. But we really want assurances that we will be protected."

Surveys now regularly indicate that around seventy percent of Israeli citizens want the conflict to conclude in return for the liberation of the hostages.

Palestinian Situation

At the area of the gathering, those paying respects gathered to pay their respects.

From the site, the sound of Israeli air strikes and artillery could be noticed just a few kilometres away in Gaza, where observers said the intense Israeli attacks carried on.

In the urban center, attacks were reported in the morning of that day in the west side Tal al-Hawa, sector and Nasr neighbourhoods and in the eastern district of Sheikh Radwan, as well the camp to the northwestern area.

"When the night falls, the anxiety appears with it," relocated urban resident a local woman, whose 17-year-old son was died by an Israeli aerial attack earlier, described.

"My family are fearful of the attacks. During nighttime we are lying together, clinging, particularly my smallest child who rests his face on me the entire evening."

"Continuously we monitor the news to see the situation. And I'm worried that this truce will not be completed and that the war will resume to us."

Medical Situation

The medical facility in the urban area announced it had received the remains of several people by the midday, including three who lost their lives in an Israeli bombing in the south part area.

Another medical facility in the south region of Khan Younis indicated another two fatalities had been transported. A person was died by Israeli forces while looking for aid to the south, medics stated.
