The distinctive yellow-colored apartment block visible behind helped us locate the video.
Our team is analyzing video footage and photographs shared this morning that depict the aftermath of a alleged car bomb explosion that Russian officials say fatally injured a high-ranking soldier in Moscow.
Officials in Russia confirmed that Lt Gen Fanil Sarvarov was inside the car that detonated and that he succumbed to his injuries. A probe is currently ongoing.
The initial step to verify the site from which the pictures originated relied on posts saying the explosion occurred on Yasenevaya Street in the southern part of the capital city of Russia.
We used panoramic mapping services on Google Maps and the Russian search engine Yandex to corroborate the distinctive yellow hue of a adjacent apartment building seen in the footage.
Locating additional buildings, streetlights and the road configuration verified the exact location the pictures were taken.
We also checked that the videos were new and that the visuals had not been manipulated.
