Before and After Images Show Glaciers Melting Visibly

Back when Matthias Huss first visited Rhône Glacier three and a half decades back, the glacier was just a short walk from where his family typically parked their automobile.

"The first time I walked on the glacier... I experienced an extraordinary emotion of eternity," says Dr. Huss.

In the present day, it's half an hour starting from that very location and the view looks completely altered.

"Each return visit, I recall how it used to be," states Dr. Huss, who is now director of the Swiss glacier monitoring network, "the glacier's appearance when I was a child."

Global Ice Loss

Parallel narratives emerge for many glaciers across the globe, as these glacial structures are diminishing - rapidly.

During 2024, glaciers excluding the enormous ice fields from Greenland and Antarctic regions lost 450 gigatons of frozen water, as reported by a new WMO study.

This corresponds to a frozen block 4.3 miles in height, 4.3 miles wide and 4.3 miles thick - enough water to occupy 180 million Olympic-sized pools.

"Glaciers are thawing globally," explains Ben Marzeion, professor of the Institute of Geography from the University of Bremen. "They are sitting in an environment that is very hostile for their preservation due to global warming."

Swiss Ice Masses Dramatically Impacted

The glaciers of Switzerland have been particularly badly hit, losing a quarter of their glacial volume over the past decade, data from the monitoring network revealed this week.

"It's truly challenging to comprehend the extent of this melt," explains the glaciologist.

However, photographs - taken from satellites and terrestrial locations - speak volumes.

Satellite images reveal the manner in which this glacier has altered over the past three decades, when the scientist initially saw it. Near the glacier's terminus is a lake in an area previously covered by ice.

Rapid Glacial Decline

Until recently, Alpine glacier experts used to consider a 2 percent ice reduction annually as exceptionally severe.

Then 2022 dramatically exceeded that threshold, recording almost 6 percent of Switzerland's remaining ice disappearing in just one year.

This was subsequently followed by significant losses in 2023, 2024 and now 2025 too.

Regine Hock, expert in glacier science from Oslo University, has been traveling to the mountain range since the 1970s.

The transformations during her career are "truly astonishing", she explains, but "what we see now show dramatic alterations within a few years."

Particular Glacier Examples

Clariden's ice mass, situated in Switzerland's northeast, was roughly in balance through the end of the twentieth century - receiving similar amounts of frozen precipitation through snowfall as it lost to melting.

However, in the current century, it has thawed quickly.

Concerning various minor glaciers, like the Pizol Glacier in Switzerland's northeastern Alps, it's been too much.

"Among these glaciers that I observed, and now it's completely gone," states Dr Huss. "Undoubtedly, this brings sorrow."

Century-scale View

Images enable us to look even further back in time.

Gries' ice mass, in Switzerland's southern region adjacent to Italy, has diminished by nearly 1.4 miles in the past century. The area previously occupied by glacial ice currently contains a major water body.

In Switzerland's southeast, the Pers Glacier historically provided ice to the more extensive Morteratsch glacier, moving downward toward lower elevations. Now the two no longer meet.

Additionally, the most extensive glacier within the Alpine range, Great Aletsch Glacier, has diminished by about 2.3km (1.4 miles) through the last three-quarters of a century. In locations previously frozen, there are now trees.

Natural Compared to Anthropogenic Causes

Glaciers have advanced and retreated through natural processes over millennia, obviously.

Throughout freezing episodes in the seventeenth, eighteenth and nineteenth centuries - related to this cooler climatic period - glaciers regularly advanced.

In this era, several were believed to be hexed according to Alpine mythological traditions, their growth associated with supernatural influences while endangering villages and agricultural areas.

Stories even exist of residents summoning clergy to talk to the spirits of glaciers and get them to move up the mountain.

Contemporary Global Warming

Glacial withdrawal became extensive across the Alps in about 1850, though the timing varied depending on location.

That coincided with rising industrialisation, when burning of fossil fuels, particularly coal, started warming our planet, yet it's difficult to separate environmental and human influences during those earlier decades.

Regarding aspects with certainty involves the exceptionally fast decline over the last four decades don't result from natural processes.

If not for human-caused global warming - through fossil fuel combustion and discharging massive volumes of carbon dioxide – glaciers would be expected to be roughly stable.

"We can solely account for it if we take into account greenhouse gas releases," confirms Prof Marzeion.

Future Projections

What is even more sobering pertains to these enormous glacial systems can take decades to completely adapt to the rapidly warming climate.

Consequently, even if global temperatures stabilised tomorrow, glacial decline would persist.
